Elizabeth City is Festival Central this weekend. Surrounding the 4th of July, the Downtown Waterfront Market at Mariner's Wharf Park is booked to capacity this Saturday with vendors offering fresh produce, baked goods and crafts; the annual Harbor Arts Festival features more than 40 juried artists and artisans on the Museum of the Albemarle Green; and Page After Page bookstore is having its For the Love of Books Literary Festival just across Water Street from the market. Taste of the Albemarle and a concert featuring the Rhondels follow Saturday evening.
The growing popularity of the weekly market and these annual festivals is sparking a Renaissance in downtown Elizabeth City, perfectly symbolized by the revamp of the historic Chesson Building into a 300-seat performing arts theater and art gallery.
